The Positive Electron: 85 years ago Carl Anderson’s discovery of the positron was published #OnThisDay.

In developing quantum mechanical theory, Paul Dirac predicted that all matter has a kind of mirror image – antimatter. A particle and its antiparticle, if charged, should have opposite charges. By studying the tracks of cosmic ray particles in a cloud chamber, Anderson discovered a positively-charged particle with a mass seemingly equal to that of an electron, in 1932, Anderson’s particle was the first antiparticle proven by experiment and was named a “positron”.

In 1924, Indian physicist Satyendra Nath Bose and German physicist Albert Einstein find a new way to count quantum particles, later called Bose-Einstein statistics, and they predict that extremely cold atoms should condense into a single quantum state, later known as a Bose-Einstein condensate.

Actually, Bose–Einstein statistics (B–E statistics) is one of two possible ways (other is Fermi-Dirac statistics) in which a collection of non-interacting indistinguishable particles may occupy a set of available discrete energy states, at thermodynamic equilibrium.

The Bose–Einstein statistics apply only to those particles not limited to single occupancy of the same state—that is, particles that do not obey the Pauli exclusion principle restrictions. Such particles have integer values of spin and are named bosons, after the statistics that correctly describe their behaviour. There must also be no significant interaction between the particles.
